Strategic Partner as Creative Director at Banter and Wit Design Studio; Lead UI Designer

A new era of eCommerce for a legendary NBA team.

At Banter and Wit Design Studio, we established a distinct partnership with the Sacramento Kings to spearhead their transition into self-operated merchandise sales through a custom-built Teamstore eCommerce platform. This comprehensive collaboration began with extensive market research, competitive analysis, and technical audits to develop a strategic roadmap for success. We guided the Kings through every phase of the project, from initial concept to final implementation, ensuring their new digital storefront would meet both immediate needs and future growth objectives.

Our partnership extends beyond the initial launch, as we continue to provide ongoing UX/UI optimization and development support. Through continuous analysis and iterative improvements, we help the Kings' creative and merchandise departments adapt to evolving customer needs and capitalize on new opportunities. This dynamic approach has enabled the platform to scale effectively alongside their growing retail operations, reinforcing their position in the digital commerce space.

OBJECTIVE

Build a state of the art eCommerce experience revolutionizing how fans shop for official team merchandise. From customer research, to UX/UI strategy and design, to development, we partner with the Kings every step of the way.

RESEACH FINDINGS AND STRATEGY

Our first phase of work took us deep into UX and customer research to define the most critical opportunities through extensive user interviews – integral to understanding the pain points, preferences, and behaviors of the Kings target audience.

As part of our research and discovery phase, we met with all stakeholders to assess and guide the correct development platform that would ensure a premium experience.

DESIGN

After determing the right platform and development strategy, we took the learnings from our UX and customer research and dove right into design ensuring it was user-friendly, aligned with customer needs and adhered to the new brand identity of the Teamstore.

We focused on consistency by building a strong Design System and Kit of Parts for the internal creative team to leverage. Unique challenges, such as the Jersey shopping experience, were met with custom strategy and focused attention.

As strategic partners, we have worked to balance a traditional retail schedule with the Kings’ regular season calendar. A unique opportunity presents itself during the regular NBA season – how do we effectively blend relevant game day content while selling a wide variety of merchandise year round? Our solution was to create a series of home page templates and modular components that specifically align with marketing and merchandise efforts during the Kings regular schedule and into playoffs (we hope).

We created a modular landing page template to feature special brand collaborations. We’re able to effectively tell a more complete story about the brand partnership, while making the shopping experience for each item accessible and easy to navigate.
